What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are natural oil that is either obtained through the process of steam distillation or it can be extracted from flowers, leaves, roots and other parts of the plants. Essential oils have the characteristic fragrance of the plant. In simpler words, we can say that Essential Oils are highly concentrated and are extracted from plants.

The leaves, stems, fruits, seeds, flowers, wood or resins of the plant contain naturally occurring oils that are used for specific biological purposes. In addition to this, an Essential Oil can also attract pollinators, provide protection against fungal and bacterial infections, defend against harmful insects, and even prevent competing vegetation from growing too close. Furthermore, these oils can also be used for the benefit of human beings.

There are different methods used for extracting precious oil from various parts of the plants. The most common method is steam distillation. Some other extraction methods that are used are cold pressing and solvent distraction. The oil which is extracted through the process of steam distillation is highly concentrated in nature as compared to one which is naturally found in plants.

Still, there are many people who don’t even realize how concentrated Essential Oils are:

•        To produce a 15 ml bottle of Orange Essential Oil, we need roughly 14 oranges.

•        To produce 1 pound of Lavender Essential Oil, it requires almost 200 pounds of plant material.

•        To produce 1 pound of Rose Essential Oil, we need 5000 pounds of rose petals.

There are misconceptions in the minds of people that natural beauty products are not better than those synthetic and chemical-rich creams, moisturizers and other cleansers. However, natural products are better than synthetic and chemical-filled products.

Consider the amount of plant materials that are required to produce these Essential Oils, then think about its effectiveness. For instance, just a few drops of oil can fill up a room with its scent for many hours AND help get relief from painful muscle cramps or joint inflammation or energize and relax your mind and body, all at the same time.
